Self-confidence: an asset for better trading

I’ve spoken with plenty of traders over the past few months.

Two things keep coming up as obstacles to their progress:

  • Lacking confidence
  • Losing confidence

Beginner or experienced trader, nobody is immune.

So what exactly do you need to do to feel confident in your trading?

Let me warn you now: it’s more than "stand up straight and put your shoulders back".

Build a positive cycle

When you win, you gain confidence.

As that confidence grows, you feel better and perform better.

The better you perform, the more you win. The more you win, the more your confidence grows.

That’s a virtuous cycle.

But the opposite happens too.

As losses pile up, you gradually lose confidence.

You stop trusting your abilities, and the cycle turns the other way.

Less confidence leads to more losses, and more losses erode your confidence further.

You’re in a vicious cycle.

Create conditions that help you win

The idea for breaking out is simple: create opportunities to succeed in your everyday life again.

Why?

Because if you feel good, confident and in control in other areas of life, you can bring that energy into your trading.

No, I’m not promising that every trade will win.

But one thing is certain: your mindset directly affects your performance.

What should you focus on?

Healthy habits

If you want to perform well in trading, you can’t ignore what happens before you sit down at your screen.

An exhausted body and mind can’t work effectively.

You can’t expect to analyse setups properly on a few hours’ sleep.

And you can’t concentrate while you’re still recovering from a night of drinking too much.

This advice sounds obvious, but most traders don’t follow it.

Surround yourself with positivity

Nobody has a 90% trading win rate, and nobody became a millionaire overnight.

Yet that’s all you see on social media...

Let’s be honest: this kind of content does more harm than good.

It paints a distorted picture of trading, puts you under unnecessary pressure, makes you bitter and, worse, destroys your confidence.

Why?

Because those goals are out of reach when you’re starting out.

Yet that’s exactly what you’re being sold.

My advice is simple: cut out content that makes you doubt yourself or feel bad, and surround yourself with the right people in trading.

Being part of a good group where you’re the only trader can help, but it isn’t ideal.

They can motivate you to push further, but they don’t really understand the specific challenges you face.

Look for people who share your journey, understand your challenges, support you when things go wrong and encourage you to progress at your own pace.

If you spend your time around negative people, or watching compulsive liars pretend they succeed at everything, you’ll get discouraged quickly.

Personally, I have my Discord community, and you’re welcome to join.

We share our wins and mistakes, and help one another improve.

Appreciate the wins

Small wins count.

If you finish a week in the green, even with modest profits, write it all down: the date, the trades you managed well and the decisions you stuck to.

Those moments will remind you that you can do this, especially during difficult periods. And you will have them.

You don’t need huge successes to move forward.

It’s those small wins that build the confidence you need to improve.
