DEGIRO’s platform
DEGIRO focuses on market access and order execution. The interface keeps to the essentials: finding securities, monitoring your portfolio, viewing the order book and checking your transaction history. It works well for investing, less so for advanced chart-based trading.

DEGIRO’s fees
No inactivity fees, no custody fees and no minimum investment.
ETF
For a selection of ETFs, DEGIRO covers the brokerage fees. You only pay a €1 handling fee per order, regardless of the amount invested. ETFs outside this selection cost €3 per order. The list of eligible ETFs is available on the website and may change at any time.
Stocks
The rate depends on the exchange where the stock is listed. A €1 handling fee is added to each order.
| Exchange | Fees |
|---|---|
| Euronext Paris, NYSE, NASDAQ | 1€ + 1€ = 2€ |
| European exchanges (London, Madrid, Amsterdam...) | 3,90€ + 1€ = 4,90€ |
| Asia, Australia, Börse Frankfurt | 5€ + 1€ = 6€ |
Crypto
Cryptocurrencies have been available at DEGIRO since 2025. Fees are 0.50% per order.
Fees to know about
- If you buy a product in a foreign currency, DEGIRO charges 0.25% for currency conversion when you buy and when you sell. On €1,000, that’s €2.50 each way.
- Investing on a foreign exchange costs €2.50 a year per exchange. Euronext Paris is free for French clients.
Regulation and security
DEGIRO is authorised to operate in France through flatexDEGIRO Bank SE, under a European passport.

DEGIRO holds your securities in a separate legal entity, an SPV, whose sole purpose is to hold and administer client assets. If DEGIRO goes bankrupt, its creditors cannot claim your securities.
Your uninvested cash sits in a bank account in your name, with its own IBAN, at flatexDEGIRO Bank SE. This balance is protected up to €100,000 by the German deposit guarantee scheme.
If segregated assets could not be returned, the German investor compensation scheme covers 90% of losses, capped at €20,000.
My review
I’ve used DEGIRO for several years, invested substantial amounts and made withdrawals without difficulty.
For someone building a long-term ETF portfolio while keeping costs as low as possible, DEGIRO is hard to beat in Europe.
The €1 fee per order on its core ETF selection, with no minimum investment or custody fees, makes it the most competitive broker in this part of the market.
The main drawback for a French resident is the lack of an IFU, the standard French investment tax statement.
DEGIRO gives you a detailed annual tax report, but you have to transfer the figures to your tax return yourself.
Because DEGIRO is a foreign broker, you must also declare the account each year to the French tax authorities using CERFA form 3916. It’s manageable, but it adds another step every year.
If you want a passive ETF portfolio in a standard securities account, DEGIRO is an excellent choice. If you want a PEA or don’t want to handle the tax reporting yourself, look at a French broker instead.
